What's a rafter?

Rafters are beams or boards that connect to ridge boards or hips. Rafters slope from the ridge board or hip and extend down to the top exterior wall plate to the perimeter or eaves. Rafters are used to support roof decking and roofing materials and are an important structural component of a home.

What type of materials are rafters made of?

Rafter Spacing

Common industry standard spacing is as follows 12", 16", 19.2", and 24" on center. Remember the larger the spacing is between rafters the larger and better the quality of the wood will be needed depending on the span of the rafters. The larger the spacing is the more weight each rafter has to support.
