The role
Wessex Water Ltd provides water and sewerage services to 2.8 million customers across the south west of England. Our Engineering and Sustainable Delivery (ESD) business is responsible for designing and building the infrastructure for our services, including sewage treatment works, pumping stations and reservoirs. ESD uses the national supply chain as well as its own in-house Civil/Mechanical and Electrical contractor to deliver this major programme of work.
There are two quantity surveyor roles available as follows:
This involves working on the investment planned at Avonmouth. Day to day, you will be reporting to the Manging Quantity Surveyor and form an integral part of the commercial team that is responsible for a programme of investment works at Avonmouth Water Recycling Centre in Bristol. You will manage all aspects of procurement, perform cost estimating and prepare and process payments. You will also negotiate variations, payment applications and final accounts, across a portfolio of projects that vary in scale, in addition to carrying out up to date and accurate cost value forecasting and reporting.
This role will see you as a valued member of the ESD Treatment Commercial team and reporting directly to the Managing Quantity Surveyor. The role involves major projects across the whole Wessex Water region which covers Bristol, Salisbury, Bournemouth, Bridgwater and everything in between. This is an opportunity to manage all commercial aspects of projects from initial inception and tender through to the settlement of final accounts. Typically, you will:
- manage all aspects of pre and post contract duties for major projects, ranging in value up to a maximum of £30m
- manage contract change, opportunity and risk, payment applications and final accounts, in addition to carrying out project forecasting and reporting
- work closely with other team members, such as project managers, designers, engineers and estimators, as well as attending regular financial meetings with senior ESD staff
- work to financial targets and deadlines, interpret project programmes, understand risk, and react to the demands of construction delivery to ensure best value for the company.
Most of all, you are expected to understand, and be committed to, the company mission, values, goals and department ethos.
What do I need?
In order to succeed in this role, you should ideally have:
- quantity surveying experience in the construction industry, preferably with experience in the NEC Suite of Contracts
- completed a degree in quantity surveying or similar construction-related qualification
- membership of the RICS/ICES is also desirable but not essential
- a strong attention to detail, self-motivation, a problem-solving nature and a drive to succeed
- the ability to interpret technical/design detail to assist in problem solving and valuing engineering options as appropriate
- experience with change and risk management, as well as tender and final account negotiation skills
- have good people skills, including leadership skills and the ability to foster professional relations with others
- a strong customer focus, while also being a team player
- a sound knowledge of health and safety related to the role.
As this position will require travel between WW offices and construction sites. A full driving licence is also required.
