Our Security Officers are at the heart of the Heathrow experience for millions of passengers each year. Our team make sure that everyone feels safe and welcome as they move through the airport.
You don’t need security experience to join us at Heathrow. We’ll give you six weeks of full-time training on full pay , as well as ongoing support and mentoring to develop your career with us.

We need to make sure all our passengers and colleagues feel safe and comfortable during our security checks. That’s why our Security Officers search people of their own gender, and why we run separate recruitment campaigns for male and female officers, to make sure we’ve got the right balance in the team.
The role
- Welcoming passengers and putting them at ease during security checks
- Conducting safety checks on passengers and colleagues, as well as on the items they bring with them
- Patrolling the airport
- Monitoring access to secure areas
- Providing excellent customer service to everyone at Heathrow
What we look for
We’ll ensure you’re prepared for the role through paid, full-time training. We’re not looking for any previous experience in Security and you do not need an SIA license.
Instead, we’re looking for you to bring:
- A positive and friendly approach to customers
- Great attention to detail
- Fluency in written and spoken English – additional languages are a bonus
- The physical fitness to cope with long periods of standing, sitting, bending and walking
- Full colour vision, as well as meeting our required standard of hearing
You also will need to:
- Be 18 or older at the time you begin training
- Have been a UK resident for at least the last three years, with the right to work in the UK
- Be happy to complete a detailed pre-employment vetting period, including medical, criminal record and counter terrorism checks. These checks usually take between 8-15 weeks, depending on your individual history
- Be available to complete full-time shift-based training for your first 6 weeks, even if you’ve chosen to work a part-time roster once in the role
Working patterns
When applying, you can preference for one of the below working patterns:
Full Time Rosters:
- Lates: Afternoon and evening shifts, lasting approximately 8.5 hours and finishing as late as 23:00, in a pattern of four days on, two days off
- Core Combination: Mixed early (starting as early as 04:15), late (finishing as late as 22:45) and some night shifts (for example 21:00-06:00), with shifts lasting approximately 8.5 hours, in a pattern of four days on, two days off
Part Time Rosters:
- Weekend Part-Time Lates: Afternoon and evening shifts (13:30-22:00), lasting 8.5 hours, on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays
- Variable Part-Time Lates: Afternoon and evening shifts, lasting approximately 8.5 hours and finishing as late as 23:00, in a pattern that includes all days of the week (including some weekends), equating to an average of 20 working hours per week
- Core Combination Part-Time: Mixed early (starting as early as 04:15), late (finishing as late as 22:45) and night shifts (for example 21:00-06:00), with shifts lasting approximately 8.5 hours, equating to an average of 20 hours per week
Once you’ve completed training, you’ll be provided with the details of your working days and hours 12 months in advance, giving you the opportunity to make plans around your shifts. Shift-swaps will often be possible, providing even greater flexibility, however it’s important that you ensure you could attend all possible shift times on the pattern you’re apply for.
Traveling to work
Parking is available free-of-charge for Heathrow colleagues, however we would encourage and support you to find a sustainable way to travel to work. As well as our dedicated cycle hub (including free bike servicing, access to a cycle loan scheme and discounts on purchases), you can benefit from discounted travel on Heathrow Express and some bus and coach routes, or get help finding someone to car share with (including a guaranteed free ride home in an emergency).
