Job description

The team:

The Deal Analytics Team (or Strategic Profitability Insights, SPI team) works with KPMG Deal Advisory (Corporate Finance, Transaction Services and Value Creation) teams to deliver value-add insights on the fundamentals of a Target business.

Our team uses a combination of Alteryx, Tableau, PowerBI, R, Python, and proprietary software to produce analyses in an efficient and effective manner. The deal teams and Targets we serve are routinely impressed with the speed at which we can create robust analysis. For example, we can understand, at a transactional level, what is driving business performance, often in 1-2 weeks, working with datasets in the tens of millions.

The role:

You will be joining a fast-growing team within Deal Advisory that is driving value for our clients using data-enabled solutions. So what does that actually mean?

Our team works on a variety of engagements across industries, and the analytics required will vary by engagement. The list of analyses below, therefore, is just a sample of what we produce, and our product offering is ever-expanding.

Using transactional, public, and private datasets, our team delivers insights on customers, products, and other categories regarding:

  • Sustainability - Pricing
  • Turnover - Profitability drivers
  • Customer/Product lifetime value - Concentration risk
  • Effectiveness and impact of strategic decisions - Wallet share
  • Feasibility of meeting financial goals

Along with leading on client engagements, you will also be expected to lead on ad-hoc tasks for the team. These requests vary widely in nature and may include developing internal trainings, assisting the risk management process, staffing and resourcing, client pitches, and networking events.

Director level appointments are made on the basis of demonstrated track record. Directors are expected to play a key role in the development of all aspects of the practice.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and be responsible for client deliverables across the deal lifecycle, including financial due diligence reports, databooks and dashboards using BI tools
  • Leverage your understanding of the deal lifecycle to quickly identify and understand the key risks and drivers of value within each engagement
  • Prioritize and effectively lead teams on deal deliverables across multiple deals and workstreams at the same time
  • Attend client pitches, create demand and convert sales. Build, commercialise and sustain relationships with top management team members for the benefit of the Firm
  • Team lead within the Deal Analytics capability, helping to oversee day to day operations, including offshore teams
  • Utilise a hypothesis-driven, problem-solving approach to explore data sets and design, construct, and rapidly test/iterate exploratory analyses to identify patterns that will reveal insight and opportunities for the client
  • Automate analyses and author pipelines via Alteryx, SQL and python based ETL framework
  • Develop interactive dashboards and reports using PowerBI and Tableau
  • Set the direction of career and skills development of team members and act as a role model with colleagues and clients by living the values of the Firm
  • Ensure that the team is always using the most cutting edge analytical techniques through internal product development and sourcing of new tools.

  • Be responsible for direct coaching and performance management of several staff in the department
  • Identify team member development needs and accelerate development by establishing the appropriate plans and frameworks with particular emphasis on coaching and skills transfer
  • Train and develop teams on relevant engagement analyses and industry KPIs
  • Retrieve, prepare, and process data from a variety of sources such as social media, transaction databases, and operational data
  • Perform machine learning, natural language, and statistical analyses, such as classification, collaborative filtering, association rules, sentiment analysis, topic modelling, time-series analysis, regression, statistical inference, and validation methods (preferred but not essential)

Skills/Qualifications required:

To succeed in this varied and demanding role you will need to demonstrate the following skills and experience:

  • Ability to make well-reasoned, data-driven decisions in ambiguous or interpretive business situations
  • Outstanding personal impact and self-awareness
  • Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills
  • Evidence of leading engagements successfully with top management teams at clients
  • The ability to lead and operate in high performing, multi-disciplinary teams
