Unique opportunity to work for St Andrew’s in our Community Sentence Treatment Requirement (CSTR) services, working with offenders to help them lead healthy and law abiding lives.

This service delivers therapeutic interventions into the probation service through the Mental Health Treatment Requirement (MHTR) programme. The service is run by St Andrew’s Healthcare, one of the UK’s leading Mental Health Charities, as one of a number of subcontractors delivering rehabilitation for offenders who are being managed on probation by the National Probation Service (NPS).

The role will be homebased, however travel for the post is needed and a full driving licence and access to a car will be required. Travel expenses will be reimbursed.

The St Andrew’s CSTR programme is a new initiative aimed at providing continuity of care, including mental health treatment to service users within the criminal justice system. The aim of the programme is to reduce reoffending rates by enhancing the overall recovery chances of individual service users. The programme provides psychological therapies on a one to one basis in probation offices and courts. The majority of work is currently undertaken online.

The successful applicant will be part of a well-established team dedicated to the delivery of high-quality mental health services to support offenders who have been referred for mental health treatment by the court. Duties are varied, but will include line management and clinical supervision of Assistant Psychologists, psychological assessment of clients, delivering specific psychological treatments, maintaining patient records and outcome measures, as well as on-going service development.

Within the role, you will be encouraged to develop your strengths and skills through a robust structure of clinical supervision and opportunities for professional development. You will also be supported to develop your role within our service according to your specific strengths and areas of professional interest. St Andrews has an excellent record of providing opportunities for research, training and continuing professional development so you will also have access to peer support from the wider Charity, as well as regular CPD events. Due to the pioneering nature of this service, there will be opportunities for service development including co-production with service users and an interest and enthusiasm in these areas is desired along with a demonstrated track record in finding novel ways of of engaging service users in psychological treatment who have typically struggled to benefit from or be accepted into available statutory and third sector services.

We are looking for a proactive, innovative and hands-on, Clinical/Counselling/ Forensic Psychologist with a strong client-focus, excellent communication skills and a “can-do” attitude, able to work independently as well as closely and collaboratively with a team co-located within an external organisation. You will be eager to take ownership and responsibility for delivering your work and will be self-driven, results-oriented and be able to demonstrate excellent time management and organisational skills, combined with the ability to prioritise a substantial workload in a balanced and flexible way. Given the population, prior experience of working within the criminal justice system is an advantage but it is essential to have considerable skills in working with complex mental health presentations such as psychosis, complex trauma and addictions.

The role is primarily based in offices and courts within Ipswich and Maidstone, and is mainly undertaken online due to infection control. A travel costs are reimbursed separately. The role will involve some travel to St Andrew’s at its Northampton site for the purposes of induction, training and development.

Our service is part of St Andrew’s Consultancy Service which operates primarily from Northampton delivering a range of community based services across London, Northampton, East of England and East Midlands. For example, we offer psychological consultancy services into residential children’s homes and into Tertiary Education establishments. We also have an Expert Witness Service and an established private therapy clinic. The successful applicant will therefore be part of a wider team of twelve enthusiastic psychologists who work flexibly with one another to support our overall service objectives. Therefore, we would enthusiastically welcome applications from someone who is eager to join this supportive team and work with us to grow and develop the Consultancy Service as a whole, especially with regard to developing new services.

Reward

We offer an excellent benefits package including pension, 38 days holiday, sickness policy on par with NHS, life cover, car lease scheme, cycle to work scheme and childcare vouchers and opportunities for research, teaching and continuing professional development.
