Who we are
The Attorney General is the law officer of the Executive Council and is responsible to see that the administration of public affairs is in accordance with the law and to ensure protection of the public interest. The Legal Services Branch provides civil and constitutional legal advice and representation to all provincial government departments and related agencies.
The Office of the Attorney General is seeking an individual to join the Legal Services Branch as Lawyer 1 within the Legal Advice Services Group.
What you will do
The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting research in a wide variety of areas of the law and for providing legal opinions to government departments and agencies on matters of statutory interpretation and general advice with respect to the conduct of government affairs and operations
Work environment
- Location: Chancery Place, Fredericton, NB
- Opportunity for hybrid work arrangement within New Brunswick, with prior approval from management
- Minimum 36.25 work hours per week

Need to have (essential skills and qualifications)
- Law Degree;
- Completion of Articling by June 2023;
- Membership in good standing or eligibility for membership in good standing with the Law Society of New Brunswick by June 2023.
- Up to 8 years of membership in good standing at the bar.
Please state your date of admission to a Canadian Law society.
Written and spoken competence in English is required. Please state your language capability.
Candidates must demonstrate on their applications how they have acquired the education and experience for this position. Your resume should be in chronological order specifying education and employment in months and years including part-time and full-time employment. Applicants must clearly demonstrate the essential qualifications to be given further consideration. Please indicate in your resume your language preference for an interview.
Applicants are required to submit with their application a writing sample of no more than five pages that they have authored within the last five years. If applying by email or mail, please attach/include the writing sample. If applying online, please send the writing sample in a separate email to the address below.
Nice to Have (asset qualifications)
Preference may be given to candidates who demonstrate, commensurate with years at the bar:
- Experience in providing written legal advice on a wide variety of areas of the law.
Subject to the response to this competition, candidates may be required to demonstrate on their application the asset qualifications in addition to the essential qualifications in order to be given further consideration.
Operational requirements
- Travel;
- Possession of a valid driver's license; and
- Working outside of regular hours of work without prior notice.
Wage
$57,954 to $109,096 annually, depending on education and experience.
